Portland, Oregon … 3935 NE MLK Jr. Blvd.
Thats where it all began for my friend Max back in late 2013. I included a picture of the first time I made it over there with my camera. I was happy for Max and am glad it has gone so well for him. If you haven’t heard of Hi-5 Bikes and live in the Portland metro area you for sure have to have been living under a rock. With the amount of events the shop partakes in every local mountain biker should have ran across them at some point by now. Races, sponsoring racers in various categories, build days and generally encouraging everyone to get out and ride.
Aside from running the shop Max also has a webzine (Northwest Max) that you can access through the shops website http://www.hi-5bikes.com . Part of the shops sponsorship program includes having the racers contribute to the webzine. Generating some content which can range from trail reports to reviews is a great way to have everyone kept up to speed on local events and what the shops riders are up to. Personally I think that its a great way for the riders to show their support for their sponsor and for those that have never written anything for a public consumption to get their feet wet and experience something new. It might help them discover a new interest.
For the majority of this past year Wes has been Max’s crime partner at the shop. Any bikes you will find in the shop have been touched by his magic hands. He likes to think of himself as a mountain bike massage therapist. Anything your bike might need you can get from Wes. He makes everyone feel welcome to come in and shoot the shit, watch/listen to fine music from the internet, talk bikes or if you need to check the schedule on the yoga classes across the street chances are he knows that too. Don’t let his appearance fool you, Wes loves him some good yoga.
Hi-5 Bikes looks to continue representing the local mountain bike scene in a positive way here in Portland with excellent support and an awesome variety of great products that Max and Wes personally try and test under our strenuous pacific northwest conditions. So stop by and check it out for yourself and show Penelope(Wes’ shop dog) some love and buy yourself a bike or something! Naturally I want to wish Max and Wes good luck on this already begun next year of business but really with all the local support they are getting I don’t think it needs to be said. \m/
